Questions About Irish Walking Routes?
We've answered the most common questions about exploring the Cliffs of Moher, Howth Head, Dingle Way, and Wicklow Mountains.
The main cliff-edge trail from O'Brien's Tower south for about 5km takes roughly 90 minutes at a comfortable pace. If you're just doing the shorter 2km section around the visitor centre, you're looking at 30-45 minutes. Many people underestimate the wind exposure and uneven ground, so it's worth building in extra time for photos and breaks.
Absolutely. The coastal path sections are well-maintained and mostly flat, with just a couple of gentle climbs. The full 8km loop is doable with children aged 5+, but you can easily shorten it by cutting through the village or heading back early. There's a great village atmosphere with cafes and ice cream stops to break things up.
Late May through September gives you the longest daylight and most stable weather, but honestly, you can walk Wicklow year-round if you're prepared. Spring (April-May) brings wildflowers and fewer crowds. Autumn (September-October) offers stunning colors. Winter's muddy and dark, but the mountains are quieter and moody. We'd skip March—it's just wet and gray.
Waterproof jacket is non-negotiable—weather changes fast on the coast. Bring layers (fleece under your shell jacket), proper walking shoes with grip, and a hat or headband because the wind can be relentless. Pack more water than you think you'll need, snacks, and a charged phone. On cliff-edge walks like the Cliffs of Moher, stay well back from edges and watch your footing—wet grass is slippy.
Not really. The Howth Head loop and most Dingle Way sections are accessible to anyone with basic fitness. Cliffs of Moher is straightforward but exposed and windy. Wicklow Mountains vary wildly—some walks are gentle forest strolls, others are serious uphill grinds. Pick routes that match your fitness, bring proper breaks, and remember that pacing yourself matters more than speed.
